For Reyner Banham, the Santa Monica-San Diego intersection represented “a work of art, both as a pattern on the map, as a monument against the sky and as a kinetic experience as one sweeps through it.” This section brings together projects and references that express a fervent interest in the freeway, in the kinetic experience, in automobile travel, defining a category of design practice inspired – and conditioned – by the road.
